GeM Portal

GeM stands for Government e-Market place. It is a government owned electronic/ digital portal which provides marketing services to Union as well as state government ministries, departments, PSUs. Through this portal procurement of things required in day-to day operation of ministries, departments, PSUs etc. is procured online from various sellers registered from across India. GeM portal comes under Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

In a recent move the union government has made it mandatory for all sellers registered on this portal to list the details of country of origin of their products. The step has been taken in line with the union government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative and Make in India initiative.

Now on the GeM portal a new filter option “Make in India” will be available and buyers will be able to know how much percentage of content in locally made is being used in the products.

H -1B Visa

Through the facility of H- 1B visa employers in United States of America employ temporarily foreign workers in USA in speciality occupation. Speciality occupation requires special knowledge. The number of visas is issued as per the provisions of Immigration and Nationality Act 1952. The number of visas to be issued annually is determined by the act.

In a recent move US President Mr. Trump has signed an Executive Order thereby putting pause on issuing new visas for a year effective from June 24th 2020. The decision was taken to protect the jobs in America, which have seen a hit due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision will have an adverse bearing on Indians who avail this Visa facility to get jobs in US.

Special Kitchen Scheme in Rajasthan

In a bid to provide nutritious food to poor and needy people, the Rajasthan government is planning to launch “Indira Rasoi Yojana”. Under his scheme nutritious food will provided at concessional rates twice a day.

To run the scheme NGO working at local level will also be involved. Use of technology for effective implementation of scheme will also be there. Other aspects of the scheme like price of food etc. is yet to be made public.


The AYUSH Ministry, government of India has directed Patanjali Ayurveda Limited to stop advertising about the COVID-19 drug – Coronil. The Ministry has asked details of claims made by the Patanjali Ayurveda regarding efficacy of the drug. The order to stop advertising the drug was taken by the ministry as the scientific study regarding the drug was not available to ministry. Ministry has asked Patanjali Ayurveda to provide details of composition etc. of drug which is being claimed as successful in treating Covid-19.

India – China Border Talks

As per the latest media reports both India and China have arrived at mutual consensus to disengage on lately emerged border disputes. The decision came after corps commander level talks were held between the two sides.

Jagannath Rath Yatra

After the Supreme Court of India’s decision that allowed participation of minimum number of people in the Jagannath Rath Yatra of this year, the Rath Yatra was held on 23rd of June with limited number of devotees.

The Rath Yatra or Chariot Festival is an annual festival held at Puri, Odisha. The festival is devoted to Lord Jagannath. The Rath Yatra is the oldest such Yatra in the world. The festival commemorates annual visit of Lord Jagannath to Gundicha Temple via Mausi Maa Temple near Saradha Bali, Puri. During the Yatra Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Lord Balabhadra and younger sister Devi Subhadra along with Sudarshan are taken for Rath Yatra.
